The Orange County Young Democrats stands in solidarity with Katie Porter, who recently revealed her harrowing experience being abused at the hands of her ex-husband. Ms. Porter is running for Congress in the Irvine area (CA-45) against Mimi Walters. Ms. Porter, the mother of three young children, was forced to endure the sort of emotional and physical abuse no woman should ever have to suffer, particularly not at the hands of their spouse. Over the past year, OCYD’s members have gotten to know Ms. Porter as a strong and fearless advocate for consumers. The recent revelations go to show that sexual abuse and harassment can happen to anyone—even the bravest and strongest among us. It is heartening that Ms. Porter was able to overcome the abuse, continue her work as a renowned consumer advocate professor, raise her three children, and run for Congress. Not all women are able to overcome such a traumatic experience, but we are hopeful that when more brave women like Katie tell their story, more women will realize they are not alone, and that they can survive and thrive.
OCYD’s endorsed candidate in CA’s 45th Congressional District is Brian Forde. Our statement regarding the abuse Ms. Porter suffered is not about politics, but rather about the importance of recognizing the endemic nature of sexual harassment and abuse, and acknowledging the importance of calling out abusers and standing in solidarity with the victims. #metoo #dobetterOC Katie Porter for Congress California CD-45 Katie Porter
