Statement Of The Orange County Young Democrats On Recent Actions Against Sanctuary State Laws In Orange County

(See the Facebook post.)

The Orange County Young Democrats strongly condemn the recent actions taken by the Orange County Board of Supervisors and Orange County Sheriff’s Department to reject and skirt California state laws designed to protect the rights of immigrants and protect public safety in our county.

Yesterday, the Orange County Board of Supervisors voted to join the Trump Administration’s politically motivated lawsuit against the state of California for a series of laws passed last year that provide protections for undocumented immigrants that have not committed serious crimes; and earlier this week, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department declared that it will skirt its obligations under California’s sanctuary state laws by publishing an online database that includes the time and date of inmates released, enabling federal immigration officials to obtain release information for persons who may be undocumented.

In taking such actions, the Orange County Board of Supervisors and Orange County Sheriff’s Department have chosen to align themselves with an Administration that has time and again targeted communities of color, attacked those that seek to protect immigrant families, and failed to provide any policy or legislative fix for our broken immigration system.

The Orange County Young Democrats stand with our immigrant neighbors and communities of color. We will advocate for their rights and support candidates and elected officials that do the same.
