STATEMENT OF THE ORANGE COUNTY YOUNG DEMOCRATS ON PRESIDENT TRUMP’S VULGAR REMARK REGARDING NON-WHITE IMMIGRANTS

Yesterday, Donald Trump defamed and attacked immigrant communities—yet again. By lamenting immigration from “shithole countries,” referring to African nations and Haiti, President Trump demonstrates his bigotry and disrespect for what is best for America, our diverse communities, and our international partners. His statement is the latest in a series of actions taken in the past several days that further illustrate that he and his Administration do not care for the interests of our communities of color, including immigrants and DACA recipients.

The President’s statement is consistent with his racist policy agenda and does not bode well for the prospects of an agreement to ensure the rights of DACA recipients and immigration reform. In the past few weeks alone, President Trump moved to expel almost 200,000 Salvadorans by ending their protected status and federal authorities, under the auspices of his Administration, raided 7-11 convenience stores across the country in a chilling hunt for immigrant workers.

Trump’s actions, which target communities of color, immigrants, and DACA recipients, are unequivocally unacceptable. Orange County has been blessed with thriving immigrant communities. These communities – our communities – are deserving of the same basic decency, respect, and fundamental rights as all Americans. The Orange County Young Democrats remain committed to resisting any and all attempts to attack our sisters and brothers. We condemn President Trump’s appalling statement and the recent actions of his Administration against immigrant families, and we stand with our immigrant family members, friends, and neighbors.
