The Orange County Young Democrats are deeply disturbed by President Donald Trump’s press conference performance with Russian President Vladimir Putin last week and his subsequent statements that appear to take the word of a Russian authoritarian over U.S. public servants.
Instead of confronting the Russian President for meddling in the 2016 U.S. elections, his support for Bashar al-Assad in Syria, or the annexation of Crimea in Ukraine, President Trump exhibited great deference to the Russian leader and parroted Russian talking points regarding NATO—undermining U.S. relationships with key NATO allies and U.S. national security.
The United States of America has much at stake in the present moment: our alliances, our values, the credibility of our intelligence agencies, and trust in our diplomacy. Perhaps most important, we must protect our constitutional democracy, and if Russia faces no consequences for meddling in one election there is no reason to think they will not try to do it again.
We urge Congress to hold the President and his Administration accountable, including at Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s testimony today in front the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Call your member of Congress today (https://www.callmycongress.com/) and demand that they use their oversight authority to ensure the Administration is upholding American values and pursuing U.S. national security interests.
