Keeping Irvine a Sanctuary City

Update on last night’s #Irvine City Council Meeting: Irvine Mayor Donald P. Wagner had agendized opposition to SB 54 (The California Values Act, commonly referred to as the Sanctuary State Bill). His letter setting the agenda item used incendiary rhetoric, including an insinuation that immigrants are “criminals responsible for violent and heinous crimes against the people of Irvine.”

When #OCYD and our activist allies heard of the Mayor’s terrible plan, our community quickly mobilized to put pressure on the Mayor and other Irvine representatives to vote against the agenda item. We thank Melissa Fox, Irvine City Councilmember, in particular, for penning an op-ed against the anti-immigrant agenda item.

Thanks to the efforts of our community activists, Mayor Wagner pulled the item before the city council meeting. Many folks still showed up to speak out in against the agenda item, in favor of sanctuary cities and states, and to voice our support and solidarity with our immigrant communities. Thanks in particular to Farrah N. Khan for Irvine City Council 2018 (#ocyd’s endorsed candidate for Irvine City Council), former Irvine Mayor Beth Krom, Activism Director Timothy Phan, and many others for speaking out against the Mayor’s ill-conceived and exclusionary agenda item.

Stay tuned, as the battle may not be over: the Mayor has indicated that he may re-agendize the item down the line.
